Geographical position

Trakošćan was built in the late 13th century as a part of the defense fortification network of the Zagorje principality. It was a small fortress serving as an observation post overlooking the road from Ptuj towards the Bednja valley.

Trakošćan is a part of the Bednja municipality which is in the north- west of the Zagorje principality, in the Varažinska province. It is surrounded by the mountain ranges of Ivančica (1062 m), Strahinjčica (847 m), Maceljska gora (715 m) and Ravna gora (686 m). It is a part of the road network which connects it to Varažinska province, Krapinsko- zagorska province and further to Zagrebačka province and to the border crossing with the Republic of Slovenia.
