Did you know...

The glass factory

In 1764 the glass factory in Trakošćan began to function. It was founded by Ivan Drašković VIII. Besides one glazier in charge there were six more apprentices and one assistant glazier. The glass factory produced plain green glasses which were sold all over Croatia and nearby Steiremark. The factory stopped working between 1773 and 1774 because of floods which occurred after persistent heavy rains.

The textile mill

In 1770 Ivan Drašković VIII founded textile mill where serfs produced fabric for overcoats called ˝darovec˝ or ˝aba˝ sold by merchants in nearby places and towns, as far as Varaždin. The import from Czech Republic and Moravia ruined the production in Trakošćan.

The saw- mill

In 1770 the saw- mill in Trakošćan began to function. Lumber exploited from the nearby woods was sawn for feudal lords and in smaller quantities sold on the local market. Serfs worked in the saw- mill and squire managed it. It is still not known when did the production stop.

Photography

Trakošćan is also known as the cradle of the photography in Croatia. It is because of the count Juraj Drašković IV who was the first known amateur photographer in Croatia, only ten years after the discovery of photography (1839) He took portraits, reproductions of the works of Art and ambiance group portraits. His nephew, the count Karlo Dragutin Drašković was a member of highly regarded photo clubs in Europe such as the Wiener Camera Club. He was also one of the first art photographers in Croatia.

Tourism

Trakošćan is also considered to be the cradle of continental tourism in Croatia. Today we can say for sure that before castle restoration took place in the 19th century the count Juraj Drašković VI had a detailed project for tourist utilization of the area. At that time, the first restoration project in Croatia, which lasted from 1840 to 1862 transformed the castle from the ruins to the lavish Neogothical summer resort building, placing around the castle a romantic English style park. A further proof that the castle was used for tourist purposes may be found in publications of Dragutin Jambrečak published in the periodical "Vienac" No. 19 dated 1871 and in "Vienac" No.10 dated 1874 in which he drew attention to the certain "red book of visitors" which wasn´t preserved. The second Guestbook with records of guests in the period from 1895 to 1922 was mentioned in an article of the periodical "Prosvjeta" No. 12 dated 1895 by Emilije Laszowsky who states that a large portion of the castle was made ready to receive guests. From an article entitled "6th Centennial of Trakoscan Citadel (1334-1934)" written by Žarko Harambašić, published in the "Morning Paper" No. 8178 dated November 4, 1934 we can learn about Trakošćan, a very visited tourist destination at the time.

The Peasant´s Revolt

From the 3rd to the 8th September 1883 an extensive peasant´s revolt occurred in the Bednja region (Višnjica, Cvetlin, Trakošćan and Bednja). It happened because of the very hard living conditions in the region. They got worse after the Hungarian inscriptions, coats of arms and other Hungarian insignia were hung on public institutions. The peasant´s revolt culminated in Bednja on the 4th September 1883 when hussars shot three peasants and seriously wounded one of them. According to the number of participants in these riots (4,000 peasants) in the Bednja region this peasant´s revolt is considered to be the second in respect of its greatness and importance, immediately after the famous peasant´s revolt in Stubica, led by Matija Gubec.
