FISHING AT THE TRAKOŠĆAN LAKE

The Trakošćan lake is a large artificial lake about a kilometer and a half long and approximately 2.5 m deep, whose total surface amounts to some 17 hectares. The water temperature may go up to 22o C in summertime. The lake's surface turnes into ice during winter for about three months. Since its very creation, the lake has had a double function: economic, as a fish pond, and aesthetical, as a decorative element proper to Romanticist park architecture.

The hydropower station, sawmill and glass factory were built on the lake dam. Today there are several phisically separated spawning sites. The spawning sites and the lake are under the control of the Recreational Fishing Association Trakošćan.

The lake is very attractive for fishing because of its location, shape, surrounding landscape- park and the castle. It is abundante in carp, amur, pike, pike- perch, bass and European catfish. The biggest specimen of the European catfish was caught in 2008 – it had 60 kg. Since the lake hasn´t been drained nor cleaned for over 30 years, it is believed that there are even bigger specimens of that fish.

The lake is very attractive for the fishing competitions and the most important one is the Cup of Trakošćan which is organized on June 25. Fishing admirers are able to buy a day ticket (80 kn), monthly and annual ticket.
