Velike pećine

Ravna gora mountain is considered to be the last range of the Southern Alps. The most attractive cliffs are the ones on the north-west of the mountain, above the village Cvetlin, which are marked for alpine climbing. These cliffs are called Velike pećine (or Švecova pećina). They are set in 6 rows and reaching a height of hundred meters.

For centuries Velike pećine attracted attention of people who lived in the area and look up to them with respect. There are notes dating back to 1839 which say: On the 12th September 1839 Sveciana began to burn and it lasted for 14 days. The fire was frightening because it seemed like the flame licks and roars all over the mountain. All over the air you could see lit up rocks and roots which produced such a noise falling on the ground that you could hear their rattle and jangle from the far distance.

On the 29th September 1867 local people lifted and consecrated a big crucifix above these cilffs hoping that terrible event won´t happen again.

Even today, nobody knows what actually happened…
