The Bednja river
The Bednja river springs in Bednjica. It is 133 km long and it flows between the mountain ranges of Ravna gora and Ivančica. It turns south at Ivanec and passes between the mountain ranges of Ivančica, Toplička gora and Kalnik to join the river Drava. Out of four rivers in the Hrvatsko zagorje region only the Bednja river flows into the river Drava. It is also the longest river which has its spring and mouth in Croatia.
Long time ago, there was a dragon which lived in the Bednja valley. People called it Pozoj. His body was made of the parts of different animals covered with spikes and shells. If awaked its voice would be like a thunder and it would threw up fire and lightning.
It was so big that, if disturbed, it could cause earthquake or storm knocking down two churches and four chapells under which he slept.
He fed hiding beneath the surface of small wetlands that were in the early spring covered with soft green grass. The grass attracted the cattle which fed on meadows till Jurjevo so it happened, very often, that livestock, and even people who were trying to save it, sunk and disappeared.
Bubbles always used to appear on the surface of these lakes.
If you see them too ... psssss because Pozoj is still breathing ...
