Climate

The Bednja region has a mild warm and rainy climate. This type of the climate is also known as ˝the beech climate˝. There are figures which show that the climate of the Bednja region vary in relation to the nearby towns. The Bednja municipality is situated on 230- 300 meters above sea level but because of the mountain range Ivanščica- Strahinjščica the climate is somewhat colder than expected for that height above sea level in the north- west Croatia. Regular climatological measurements which started in 2006 prove that statement. The Bednja region normally marks one of the lowest morning temperatures in Croatia during the winter, its very often -20 degrees which places Bednja in the same group with Gospić and Korenica and it also differs it from Varaždin, Krapina or Zagreb. It’s a well known fact that vegetation in spring is always late at least two weeks in relation to the surrounding area. It´s also normal that it snows in the Bednja region during the winter when the atmospherics cover the area while at the same time it rains in other parts of the region. It is obviously because the temperature of the ground is only a degree lower and it is enough to create snow instead of a rain. The climate of the Bednja region is similar to the climate of the high plains so this area is also called ˝Zagorska Lika˝. On the opposite side of Strahinjščica, in the area of Krapina, very often a strong wind blows which is similar to the north- eastern wind blowing at the seaside- bura (and it appears at the same time) so we may call that wind ˝Zagorska bura˝. However, the thesis about ˝Zagorska Lika˝ is very interesting and deserves further research.
