The past of the Bednja region

This part of the Hrvatsko zagorje region has been for centuries practically cut off from the rest of the world due to its traffic isolation. Such geographic isolation and peace that has prevailed for centuries with almost no migration whatsoever resulted in preservation of rich and original tradition so that authentic and archaic culture has been handed over from generation to generation (speech, garments, tradition, customs and traditional building). After the feudalism was cancelled, elementary schools were introduced and educational courses for adults established, and especially after the huge migration of the young who left their homes seeking jobs or education in other regions, the external influence began to change the traditional culture (especially in respect of apparel and building tradition and much less in respect of the local dialect and customs).
